Behind the Characters BONUS: Ezra Daron

Good Morning Readers!  I have decided to write two bonus posts to the series of “Behind the Characters”.  It was requested that I do a little insider on Ezra Daron and Gerrold Victoire for my bonus characters so I figured I would start with Ezra.  She’s a little easier of a character to unpack.

Something my antagonists all have in common, that wasn’t entirely a conscious decision on my part is that they all take a behind-the-scenes approach to achieving their goals, allowing others to do their dirty work.  As my first created antagonist, this was the goal for Ezra Daron.  Ezra Daron was created as the leader of the angels, with a strong presence paired with a small and petite physique.  One of my favorite eras is the 1920’s to the 1940’s where art deco and flappers were very much prominent, so I decided to base Ezra’s aesthetic entirely on that theme.  Even going so far as to model her after Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby, one of my favorite high school literary requirements.

In her development, I decided to make her one of the most conflicting characters of the story.  So conflicted that she managed to delude herself into believing the story full of lies that she’s managed to convince her angels of as well.  For centuries, she’s convinced every angel in existence that vampires are evil blood sucking creatures that are abominations, and over time she convinced herself that was the truth as well, to the point that she would easily start a war with them over the smallest thing such as procreating with the angels.  She absolutely wants to convince the angels that the vampires are to be feared and are terrible creatures, but many people outside of the angels know that the vampires aren’t what she makes them out to be.

Aside from having conflicting feelings, I wanted Ezra to have a lot of secrets that she’s keeping from those around her, secrets that, once out, would alter how her own people view her.  Frost is a prime example of that experience.  Ezra’s narrow-minded viewpoints are what end up ultimately causing the majority of her problems, and she’s going to have to reap what she sowed.  Although Ezra doesn’t play a huge role in Fallen Ribbon, her every action has a great impact on the events that follow those actions.

I wanted Ezra’s role to be untouchable yet impactful on the world around her.  She uses her world that she created, the Immortal realm, as a means of keeping everyone at arm’s length from her.  She firmly believes that she is alone in the world, despite the angels she surrounds herself with and because of that, she lashes out at everyone, causing them to question their loyalty to her.  Regardless of how much Ezra lashes out on the world, and declares war against anyone who doesn’t fit into her box of expectations, all she wants is to not be alone.  That is the curse of duality that she faces throughout her long existence.

To learn more about Ezra, read my upcoming novel, Fallen Ribbon in all formats available; Ebook, Paperback, and Hardcover.  Out on August 15th, 2024!
