Species Introduction: The Angels
One of the only creatures of pure light essence, the Angels’ leader is Ezra Daron, the first angel. Long ago she created the Immortal Realm as a world separate from mortal creatures as a means of escaping the cruelty of mortality. Without entirely meaning to, she made the Immortal Realm a place for where all mortal supernatural creatures go to after death. Here, they meet the next phase of their lives in a place where the angels rule as the superior species.
The first angels were created by Ezra out of the loneliness in her heart for more people to be like her. These angels would later become her council members and voices of reason as she rules over the Immortal Realm. She continued to create angels as she saw fit, fulfilling her every whim and desire to be surrounded by likeminded people. Later, however, as the angels would become their own people, some began to reproduce, and angels began to be born. These naturally born angels would become the first mortals within the Immortal Realm, and after seeing the first generation of mortal angels die in what was supposed to be an immortal world, Ezra created a magical bond to the world, stopping mortality for any angel once it reached maturity.
The ambiguity of this bond meant that the bond decided once the angel had reached maturity and that there was no set age or point in which the angels stopped growing. This was partially because time does not exist in the Immortal Realm, and therefore had no construct to exist upon. Therefore, while some angels appeared to be children, they could, in fact, be fully matured angels.
Regardless of how they come to be, the angels’ powers are tied to Ezra Daron and the Immortal Realm as they are one. And as long as Ezra Daron lives, so do her angels as their lives and fate are also tied to hers. Once she created the bond for eternal life in the Immortal Realm, the only way to truly kill an angel is in the Mortal Realm and their wings must be severed from their bodies. Their wings are the ties to immortality that allow them to be superior in power over the mortals, if one were to sever those ties, they would cease to have access to that power.
The mortals used to say, “An angel cut off from its home is an angel cut off from its power,” after an angel was slain in the Mortal Realm unexpectedly. It was then Ezra realized the vulnerability her angels possessed in the world of mortals. Without their wings, they cannot return to their homeland, except in a mortal death because they had no way to get back. Afraid of how the mortals might take weakness; of this weakness, Ezra harnessed her powers once again and wiped the memory of everyone who knew of the angel’s death in the Mortal Realm. She wanted no one to think of the angels as having a weakness. With the angels’ lives tied to Ezra’s and the mortals believing there was no true way to kill an angel, the angels would be become invincible in concept alone, and that’s all she needed. Since the mortals’ memories were wiped, the angels presently limit their time in the Mortal Realm and keep a low profile while there. Only the strongest are permitted to leave the Immortal Realm by Ezra Daron’s decree.
