Species Introduction: The Vampires

The vampires have been around for nearly a millennium, unsure of when their origins started, they used to be openly known creatures to the humans of Romania; dark predators feeding off the blood of lower mortal creatures at night until one day, they just disappeared.  One day rumors of a hidden, supposedly moving, island off the coast of France and Italy appeared with a Romanian man with his Russian wife, dealing in trading’s of new and profound sciences in exchange for basic goods to help sustain their life on their private island.  The couple would always come to the mainland at night to make their trades with the locals, they were always on and off the coasts of Europe like a dark whisper that no one could tell if was good or bad, but always mysterious.

Eventually the island disappeared for many years, later reappearing in what would become the Black Sea. This time, the husband, now father was welcoming his three daughters to the mainland with the wife nowhere to be found.  But where they appeared, dead bodies soon also did too.  Eventually the locals ran the family out and the father, began to only allow select few visitors onto his private island intermittently.

From this family, a new rumor of vampires unfolded as years drew on, and the rumors grew amongst the masses.  The moving island would make its appearances in random parts of the world and the vampires spread like a disease.  Humans were unable to ever confirm the existence of the vampires as anything more than a distant bad dream or memory, and that is how the vampires prefer to keep it.

The island, later named Daron after the first family, is the homeland of the vampires where the vampire queens reside presently.  Although the queens were born into this world and do not concern themselves with the pains of the sun, turned vampires do not have the same luxury and only frequent the magically sun-soaked island at night when it is safe for them to come out.

Vampires can continue the expanse of their species through multiple means.  Turning a mortal creature into one of them by feeding them their blood as they die is the most common means of turning.  Like a parent having a baby, the turned vampires pass their traits and abilities through their mortal progeny and turn them immortal upon their final breaths.  Most newly turned vampires will inherit things such as their sire’s eye color, previous magical abilities, and a connection to sense their sire from anywhere in the world.  The sire can always sense their progenies and peak into their thoughts and emotions at will.

Vampires may also create more vampires by conceiving a child in the path of totality of a solar eclipse.  It is almost guaranteed that if two vampires were to mate during a total solar eclipse, by the end of the brief period, they will be with child.  This has become a sacred practice to help produce heirs for royal lines and high ranking families in the vampire communities because it also guarantees the continuation of the species without involving murder and the disappearance of mortals.  When a vampire woman becomes with child during this period, she will remain mortal for the duration of her pregnancy to safely carry the child.

Some have theorized this was a curse originally placed on vampires by witches as when the solar eclipse is in effect, all vampires lose their immortality and powers during the brief period that it’s happening. During a lunar eclipse, however, all vampires’ powers become heightened, and they become mad with a bloodlust to kill their own kind.  The effect of the lunar eclipse on vampires is what fuels the theories that witches cursed the vampires long ago.  However, it had been discerned that born vampire hybrids, such as a faery vampire aren’t nearly as affected by this impediment as the purebreds or turned vampires.

Regardless of their origins, vampires generally inherit the traits and abilities of their predecessors before them including incredibly strength and speed.  While some might have some sort of psychic powers, others might have elemental powers, while some might not have anything to speak of.  It is all dependent on their lineage and the strength of their predecessors.
