Behind the Characters BONUS: Gerrold Victoire

Good Morning Readers!  Welcome to another bonus post in my current blog series, “Behind the Characters”!  Today I will be giving a brief introduction to my creation of the vampire, Gerrold Victoire!  He is a powerful vampire with a rich background dating back centuries to the beginnings of vampire history.  When I first created him, I wanted a powerful manipulative vampire that seems untouchable in a similar sense to Ezra but more political and physical.  He is one of many that can be considered an antagonist, but ultimately his goals are to always benefit the vampire race.

The first thing to inspire Gerrold Victoire was the character, Amshel Goldsmith from the Adult Swim anime, Blood+.  He is one of my favorite antagonists in vampire media because of how calculated and manipulative he is.  Amshel is a curious scientific mind that constantly wants to learn about the world around him and use the Chiropterans to become more powerful.  Amshel’s curious mind was what really got me started with Gerrold.  After seeing a lot of stories of old vampires living for hundreds of years, I began to notice a pattern that the older you are the less you care about moral grounds.

This is the case for Gerrold.  He was one of the first vampires to be turned, and he cares deeply about the survival of the vampire race but that eventually would evolve into doing literally anything he deems necessary to ensure said survival.  And as he’s gotten older, the less he cares about the ramifications of his actions because he believes he doesn’t have anything to lose over it.  He believes he’s not capable of losing anything because he’s untouchable.

Gerrold is supposed to be a scientist with those classic scientist traits.  I wanted his biggest traits to be the thrill of seeking knowledge and experimenting, pushing the boundaries of science to better understand it, and even being unaware of the struggle of, “Just because we can do something, does that mean we should do it?”  I wanted to create a character that was more than willing to push the boundaries of the Could versus Should Dilemma to the point that the world around him tells him to stop and constantly questions why he does what he does.  The simplest answer being, Gerrold does what he does because he wants to and there is no one alive older or stronger than him to stop him.  Literally no one has the capabilities to stop this man, so he takes advantage of that.  He is feared, hated, respected, and loved.  Although that last one is often a stretch for those that do still love him.

When you’re alive for as long as Gerrold has been and you’ve done as many malicious things as he has, there are more people who hate you more than there are people who are still willing to love you.  I want Gerrold’s existence to be as frustrating for my readers as it is for the people in my universe and when it comes to his character’s debut.  Let me know what you think of the mad vampire scientist when you read my debut novel, Fallen Ribbon when it comes out on August 15th!
