Species Introduction: The Faeries

Natural born creatures of living magic, the fae have existed longer than any other supernatural creature.  They are blessed with long lives and are deeply connected to the earth in every way and many of the faeries get their power from aspects of the earth while others draw their power from the essences that exist within the energies of the world.  The faeries, in the early years of the mortal realm, divided themselves accordingly into groups called The Orders.

The Lucis Order consists of the faeries of light.  Their power is drawn from the essence of light and aside from the angels, they are the only other creatures being true creatures of light.  This is because most creatures have a little bit of light and darkness, and hardly any are ever entirely one or the other.

Connected directly to the magics of the earth, the Frux Order and the Oceanus Order prioritize attuning their magic to the wellbeing of the natural earth whether by land or body of water.  The first and last things they care most about will always be the nature of the world around them.

The Dark Order acts as the counter side of the balance with the Lucis Order.  Light cannot exist without darkness, and therefore the Dark Order draws its power from the essence of darkness.  Where the Lucis Order is strict and unwavering in their beliefs, the fae of the Dark Order are more lucid and flow with the concept of change.  They are observers and only take action after making a full evaluation.  In some regards they are the harbringers of chaos because of this trait, much to the Lucis Order’s disliking.

The most powerful of the orders being the Summus Order, known for their supreme power, they draw from the essence of the other orders.  They are the rainbow of all the faery powers wrapped into one.  They bring aspects of chaos and control to the world around them, and they control the pure elemental aspects of nature in their powers as well.  They usually make final decisions for the good of all fae folk.

Although the faeries operate under separate orders, they stay unified as one whole community with the goal of the preservation of all things naturally occurring: whether it be essences, natural earth, or even time.  They do not have any one leader or hierarchy, instead they have chosen representatives for each order that makes decisions for the collective based on a democracy.  To keep a fairness within the orders, there must always be a male and female representative for each order, summing to a total of ten representatives. Because their primary focus is on the world itself, they choose to remain neutral in any racial disputes between species.  Therefore, they are neither allies nor enemies of both the angels and vampires.  However, because of the unnatural nature of the lygoids, the fae unanimously stand against the demonic creatures.

Their equivalent to royalty is akin to familial seniority.  The oldest families in the faery orders are not necessarily royal but are highly regarded and respected as they tend to possess the most knowledge of faery history and have the purest faery bloodlines.  The faeries see knowledge as power, the more knowledge you have the more powerful you are as you are likely able to tap into magics that had been long forgotten if your family knew to preserve that knowledge for generations.

The faeries are not immortal creatures as they are born and eventually die, despite having incredibly long lives.  The population of faeries is very limited, however, because it’s incredibly difficult for the fae to conceive children, so a newborn faery is rare.  It’s easier to have a half fae child than a pure-bred faery which is why there are so many comparatively.  With that in mind, the fae worry about the prospect of their kind being killed off by creatures such as the lygoids whom once they take possession of a person, the only known way to dispel them is by killing the host’s body.  Under ideal circumstances, the faeries ideal way to die is by their own terms at the end of their lives.

The most common way to harm or kill a faery is by using iron against them.  It is incredibly poisonous to them and extremely difficult to heal.  Much like the bite of a werewolf is toxic to vampires, the bite of a vampire is also toxic faeries.  None have been known to survive the bite of a vampire.  Much of the information regarding the history and lineage of the fae is well hidden information they keep to themselves.  They don’t like to indulge any information that could be used against them, especially to the vampires and angels.
